False Eyelashes 101

June 14, 2008

I admit, during my early days of high school..I was scared of false eyelashes. With the different brands, lengths, styles, it can be overwhelming for first time false eyelash users. Don’t fret! Here’s your guide to the world of false eyelashes

Types Of False Eyelashes

false eyelashes

Strip Lashes – These lashes come two in a pair and come in a variety of lengths, thickness, colors, etc.

Separate Flares – These lashes are the half versions of the strip lashes. They are applied to the outer edge.

Individual Lashes – These lashes come in two varieties : regular or clusters. These are the most natural looking out of all the lashes and create a more fuller look for your natural lashes. When applying individuals, you have to apply one lash or cluster at a time.

Types Of Glue

  • When applying individual/cluster lashes, you need to use individual eyelash adhesive. This adhesive secures the lashes for up to 6 weeks if taken care of properly.
  • When applying strip or flares, you need to use a regular eyelash adhesive such as DUO. Duo adhesive is a great brand to use because when using this adhesive on my lashes, they stay on securely without lifting at the edges by the end of the day.

Tutorial On How To Apply False Eyelashes

  • This tutorial is by far my favorite for false eyelashes. Complete with pictures and detailed step by step’s.

Removal & Keep Up

  • Do not tug on the lashes. If you do, chances are you might be pulling off your real lashes too. That’s never a good thing.
  • You can invest in false eyelash/make up remover or you can simply use olive oil or virgin coconut oil to loosen up the lashes.
  • To clean your lashes, put a few drops of water til the glue on the strip loosens

Tips & Tricks

  • Apply false eyelashes after doing your eye make up.
  • Use mascara before and after applying the false eyelashes to blend into your natural lashes.
  • If you plan on wearing eyeliner, use an eyeliner that doesn’t smudge easily or simply opt to using liquid eyeliner or using an dampen thin liner brush + eyeshadow. The last thing you want is smudged up eyeliner after applying your eyelashes.
  • False eyelashes too big? Just cut a little bit of the lashes on the inner edge to best fit your eye shape.
  • If your wearing a lot of eye make up and want to wear false eyelashes, use natural looking lashes like Ardell’s #109 (one of my personal favorites: pictures here & here of the look).
  • Don’t feel like wearing mascara, but feel like you need to wear something? Use Ardell’s #305 flare lashes paired up with a black winged out eyeliner for lazy make up days (one of my new favorite looks + lashes).
  • Practice makes perfect! Practice applying lashes on during your free time to get hang of false eyelashes and to see which lashes best fits your eyes.
  • Remember ladies: Stock up on lashes, you can NEVER have too many!

Make Up Tips For Prom/Special Events

April 21, 2008

prom make up

You want to look beautiful on your big day, but don’t know where to begin? Here are some helpful tips for doing your own make up for prom or for a special event.

  • If you do decided to get your make up done by a make up artist, bring photo references of what you want the artist to achieve. Photos from magazines of your favorite celebrities with make up looks you like are very helpful.
  • Make sure to keep up with your skincare routines during the weeks following up to your event! Who wants to have breakouts on the day of? The night before, apply a facial mask to make your face feel fresh before your big night.
  • Make sure to apply a foundation primer before applying your foundation.
  • Use a foundation that best matches your skintone. The last thing you want is uneven looking skin. When applying foundation, apply foundation to your neckline as well. Set your foundation with a loose powder. Remember: When it comes to foundation, less is more.
  • Decide if you want to play up your eyes or lips. The rule of thumb is focus on the eyes/downplay lips or focus on the lips/downplay eyes
  • Before doing any type of eye make up, make sure to apply an eyeshadow base to avoid creased eyeshadow before night’s end. When it comes to eyeshadows, you don’t have to be matchy matchy with the color of your dress. Use eyeshadows that compliments the dress by using contrast colors. Having trouble figuring out which eyeshadow colors best goes with your dress? Check out this entry about outfit/eyeshadow color combos I did a few months ago. Experiment with make up looks before your big night.
  • Wear smudge proof/waterproof eyeliners and mascaras. Make up smudges are bound to happen on the dance floor if your not using waterproof formula eyeliners and mascaras.
  • Want spicy up your eye make up look? Wear false eyelashes! Don’t know how to apply false eyelashes? Check out this tutorial + pictures on Specktra.net.
  • Keep blushes natural looking and a color that best matches your skintone.
  • Make sure the lip color you choose doesn’t wash out your face. Prime your lips with a lip balm before applying a lip color. Use a lip liner that best matches either your lipstick or lipgloss. Apply the lipliner first. This allows your lip color to last longer. When applying lipstick (if that’s what you decide to use), make sure to apply it with a lip brush instead of applying it directly from the tube. This also helps prolonging the color.
  • Special Event bag make up essentials; blotting sheets or pressed blotting powder compact, a mirror, lipstick or lip gloss, and eyeliner.

Make Up Shorts ; Another try at NYC’s false eyelashes

October 8, 2007

I use to wear NYC’s false eyelashes back in my early years in high school. (Like,I still am now) I was obessed with eyelashes. I re-introduced myself to NYC lashes a few days ago and I have no clue as to why I stopped wearing them. Although, they are self adhesive, I used Duo eyelash adhesive (best glue for any false eyelashes). They are so easy to put on and are perfect for first time false eyelash users who don’t want to spend too much on lashes quite yet. These lashes are less than $2 at my Target. I’d stock up considering it’s the halloween season and I’ve noticed that NYC lashes usually sell out more so during this time of year. They give Ardell a good run for their money.

Precious’ Must Have Beauty Item ; False Eyelashes

September 26, 2007

I loveloveLOVE false eyelashes! They brighten up your eyes & spice up any make up look. Natural to dramatic, I love and use them all. My favorite brand of eyelashes are Ardell. They come in many styles & lengths.Not to mention they are very inexpensive (at my local Sally Beauty store, they are only $2.99-3.99). False eyelashes often get this misconception of being hard to put on. Not true. They take some practice and time to get the hang of applying them on. When you finally learn how to put them on, you’ll never want to stop wearing them. My favorite tutorial (with easy to follow steps + visuals) on how to apply lashes (for beginners & people who have tried but, haven’t got the hang of lashes yet) is by Snowkei on Specktra.net. Specktra is a very helpful website that offers a forum for make up addicts a like asking & answering questions relating to cosmetics/beauty/etc & also offering easy to follow make up tutorials & make up pictures by the members. And for good meaure, pictures of me wearing false eyelashes;

Be bold & make a statement with killer lashes
